Helped Launch His Career
In 1964, a Boston Globe reviewer reported “If the Romans had been able to photograph the audiences arriving in the arena to bait the gladiators, they might have come up with the same faces one sees in ‘Demo Derby’ . . . Producer Jim Pike has come up with a remarkable film which is one of the most galvanic impressions of modern life and teenage recreation I have ever seen on the screen.”

Travis Pike’s first title song was for his father’s crash ‘em, smash ‘em, Demo Derby, released in 1964, while Travis was overseas. Ten years later, Travis was asked to score The Second Gun, a two-hour documentary about the June 5th, 1978 assassination of Robert Kennedy, during the Democratic primaries.

Your listeners will be fascinated by Travis Pike's tales about his involvement in these two historically significant documentary films from the turbulent decade explored in his recent book, Odd Tales and Wonders.

Also ask Travis to tell:

When and how he came to write the Demo Derby title song?

What technical problems arose during the on-location, night filming of a live-action, demomolition derby, at Norwood Arena in Norwood, Massachusetts, and how Pike Productions managed to overcome them?

How Demo Derby, a little independent production, managed to get booked on more than 6,000 screens across the country, with the Beatles Hard Day’s Night?

Why and how, ten years later, Pike was asked to provide the score for “The Second Gun,” a 1974 Golden Globe nominee for Best Documentary Film, about the investigation (and suggested cover-up), of the Robert Kennedy assassination?
